Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics: Inspiration Information 3. Astatke (Astatqé) is the father of Ethio-Jazz and has come to be appreciated outside specialist circles in recent years. His music featured heavily in Jim Jarmusch's 2005 film Broken Flowers, and before that, in 1998, an entire edition of the Ethiopiques album series was devoted to his work. His sound intertwines funk and jazz elements with traditional Ethiopian folk melodies and echoes of Coptic Church music. Astatke's compositions frequently combine his own vibraphone and conga playing with the distinctive sound of the lyre-like krar, which works with five tones instead of the seven-note scale typical of western music. From Inspiration Information 3. The Heliocentrics -- the London-based collective centered around drummer Malcolm Catto, bassist Jake Ferguson and producer Mike Burnham -- first performed with legendary Ethiopian Jazz composer/arranger/pianist/vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke in early 2008. The pairing went so well -- Astatke celebrated the band as the Heliocentrics performed the classic songs Astatke recorded for the Ethiopian Amha label in the late 60s and early 70s -- that a collaborative recording session became a must. Thus began the landmark sessions in the Heliocentrics' cavernous studio that resulted in Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics: Inspiration Information 3.
