Icc Team
Officials from the International Criminal Court are in the country to get opinions and views of the victims of the post election violence to see whether the cases required the full investigations by the ICC or not. Last month, ICC Prosecutor Louis Moreno Ocampo formally requested the International Criminal Court judges to authorize investigations into the violence. As per the Rome statute, victims of the violence have been given 30 days to send their views to the judges, although this does not entail submission of evidence as the court is yet to give permission for the commencement of the investigations. Chris Wang'ombe reports.

Crime Against Humanity?
The International Criminal Court issues an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, marking the first ICC warrant in history against a sitting head of state. Hello, Im Charlotte Bellis, and youre watching Newsy.com. www.newsy.com Bashir is being charged for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Were covering reactions from Al Jazeera English, Human Rights Watch, The BBC, The New York Times and AFP. Al Jazeera English shows Bashir speaking at a demonstration, which took place only days before the warrant was announced. Sudanese people came out to show their support for Bashir. In the Arab world, such a show of support is traditional and reassuring, but it can easily make head of state see himself as invulnerable. In the end all of these resolutions are nothing. This is not the first time they have issued such a resolution. I say, put these resolutions in the water and drink them all (Al Jazeera English) Many have alleged Bashir is responsible for genocide in Darfur. But Human Rights Watch reports the ICC couldnt find evidence to support charges of genocide. Genocide requires evidence that the crimes were committed specifically "with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part," a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group solely on the basis of its identity. (Human Rights Watch) The New York Times takes a look at the region and focuses on the power Bashir holds in Sudan. You know people, the closest to God among you is the most pious. People fear ...

International Court Issues Arrest Warrant For Sudans Bashir
The International Criminal Court has ordered the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, charging him with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. The court said Bashir directed attacks that resulted in the murder, rape and torture of hundreds of thousands of people in Darfur. However, it also said there was not sufficient evidence to support charges of genocide. The United Nations says that at least 300000 have died in the conflict in Darfur and 2.5 million have been displaced. On Tuesday, Bashir responded to the impending warrant by saying the ICC could eat it. Amir Idris, a professor of African studies at Fordham University who grew up in Sudan, joins Martin Savidge to discuss the chances that Bashir will stand trial, how it will impact violence in Darfur and the US position on Darfur and the ICC. Maximsnewsnetwork: Icc Radovan Karadzic Bosnia Serb War Criminal: Icty
MaximsNewsNetwork: 14 October 2009 - UNTV - United Nations: Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, who is accused of waging genocide against Bosnia's Muslim population in the early 1990s, will go on trial this month, after a war crimes court ruled against two appeals. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) Tribunal Registrar John Hocking comments on the upcoming trial. The genocide trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadžic before the United Nations war crimes tribunal for the 1990s Balkan conflicts will start on 26 October at the latest, after his appeal for immunity was turned down. Karadžic was appealing the rejection in July by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) of his claim to immunity from prosecution due to an agreement he says he struck in 1996 with US officials led by Richard Holbrooke. The Registrar of the ICTY, John Hocking told UNifeed that Karadžic, who has a large team of legal advisers is representing himself and the tribunal is doing all it can to facilitate his right to do so. The ICTYs appeals chamber said on Monday that Karadžic may present during the course of his trial evidence supporting his allegations, which could be considered for the purpose of sentencing. Hocking said that one of the key aspects of ICTY trials is that they are both fair and expeditious as a trial that drags on for many, many years is not in the best interest of the accused. After more than a decade ...

Invisible Children: The Rescue
www.invisiblechildren.com In the past 20 years about 30000 - 50000 children have been abducted. 90% of the LRA army is abducted children. For 23 years, the government of Uganda and a rebel group called the Lords Resistance Army, led by a man named Joseph Kony, has engaged in Africas longest war. In recent years, peace was seemingly within reach, largely due to the Juba Peace Talks that began in July 2006. However, despite a ceasefire signed between the LRA and Ugandan government, efforts toward peace through the Juba Peace Talks were stalled on several occasions by Konys refusal to sign the final peace agreement. Konys absence at the peace agreement signing on November 29, 2008 proved his promises to be futile and ultimately disabled the peace talks. Furthermore, the ICC has obtained evidence that Kony used the ceasefire during the peace talks to regroup, regain strength and resume child abductions. Joseph Kony is the worlds first individual indicted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. Since September 2008, hostility in the Orientale province in DR Congo and Western Equatoria in South Sudan has reached a feverish pitch. In apparent desperation and a renewed will to spread terror to DR Congo, the LRA murdered over six hundredand abducted more than one hundred and sixty children to fight amongst its ranks on December 25, 2008. More than 104000 Congolese have been displaced since Christmas in attempts to escape the LRA forces. A civil war ...

The Power (and Powerlessness) Of The International Criminal Court | Global 3000

How are chief prosecutor Ocampo and his staff approaching the case, and how are they gathering evidence? And just how powerful is the International Criminal Court? In the al-Bashir case, the court's authority appears to be quite limited. Despite the arrest warrant issued against him,the Sudanese president is still free to roam the African continent. Witness A Voice For Victims | Global 3000
Thousands of people are persecuted, tortured and oppressed each day. And most of the time, perpetrators can feel secure in the knowledge that they won't ever be held responsible for their actions - unless witnesses are brave enough to stand up and testify in a court of law.Witness,an organization founded by English musician Peter Gabriel, helps victims find their voice. His idea: arm as many people as possible with cameras to raise the world's awareness of human rights abuses. Without NGOs like Witness and the organization's staff - people who often risk their lives for their work - much of the evidence against war criminals would not come to light. Bukeni Waruzi spent six years collecting filmed material on child soldiers - video that was used in the case against Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
